It is a legal obligation for cat and dog owners to have their pets microchipped.

A microchip is quickly and simply inserted under the animal’s skin. It gives the animal a unique code when scanned. The owners contact details are kept on a database. This gives your pet the best possible chance of being identified and returned to you.

Unlike collars and tags a microchip cannot be lost or removed.

It is not only cats and dogs that can be microchipped. Many pets including rabbits and horses can also be chipped. Always check with your vet first, advice can change depending on the species, size and condition of your pet.

What happens if I don’t microchip my pet?

It is a legal requirement for pet owners to microchip their cat or dog.

Cats must be microchipped before they reach the age of 20 weeks. For dogs it is by the age of eight weeks. Contact details must be stored and kept up to date in a database. Owners that do not microchip their pets may be fined up to £500.

Whose responsibility is it to microchip a puppy?

A dog breeder must microchip a puppy before selling them. Breeders must also register their details on a database. Always make sure a puppy is microchipped before taking them home.
